We have a different type of machine. Maybe one failed once in the years I've been doing it: primaries and general, presidential years and in-between.

Yes, there is *lots* of paperwork to fill out, but its not redundant (except copying totals to a master sheet).

The last two elections we have had electronic poll books: the list of voters on a machine. They are wonderful! (Once you get down how to use them.) Maryland offers quit good training for election judges. The biggest headache is provisional voting. There are nine different cases where someone can't use the machines in the regular way (moved, listed as already voted, absentee, etc. etc.), but they can have a paper ballot anyway. The Board of Elections sorts out whether or not to count the ballot from the documentation on the outside of the ballot envelope. If it is accepted, they remove the anonymous ballot and count them.

Our machines don't have a paper record, either. They are touch screen.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19730683.post-8466370831276136812010-04-22T11:57:07.233-04:002010-04-22T11:57:07.233-04:00Jeremy: I found some enrollment and student/teach...Jeremy: I found some enrollment and student/teacher data that is from 2008. here is the link
http://www.schooldigger.com/go/PA/schoolrank.aspx?sortexp=LEANAME&sortdir=a&findletter=EUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14728265052243232285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19730683.post-38189125898009248022010-04-22T07:37:34.689-04:002010-04-22T07:37:34.689-04:00This morning the Today Show reported 300,000 teach...This morning the Today Show reported 300,000 teachers could be laid off nationwide for financial reasons, and some classrooms have 50 students to a teacher.Geoff Knauthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12025560607512616605noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19730683.post-23650631522900079272010-01-30T02:56:28.793-05:002010-01-30T02:56:28.793-05:00I am using the python json library to get json con...I am using the python json library to get json content which is returned in bytes. Paid for by what? THERE IS NO MONEY IN CITIZEN BLOGGING. What blogger is going to spend a year fighting for arrest logs, spending his own time, effort and MONEY to sue for them? Where is the practical incentive to do this systematically, across all of the traditional beats that newspapers once covered?

Newspapers were flawed but they had a financial stake in pursuing news. When it was costly -- sending someone to Fallujah or Rome or Johannesburg for a year -- they did it and covered the expenses.

When public officials tried to withhold information, they sent more reporters to surround the story.

WHERE IS ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPENING TO REPLACE NEWSPAPERS. The internet is a powerful tool, but that is all that it is. Suggesting that it can replace journalism is a fart in high wind. It is commentary, not reporting, much like your goofy comments bear no resemblance to the solving of actual problems in an actual world.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19730683.post-57236170960465706522009-01-30T11:15:00.000-05:002009-01-30T11:15:00.000-05:00Something odd either on blogger or planet python m...Something odd either on blogger or planet python made this post "new" again.Jack Diederichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01875505174692466327noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19730683.post-21324943041665147672008-12-12T19:46:00.000-05:002008-12-12T19:46:00.000-05:00Every vote counts!Every vote counts!salukhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00725212644477814680noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19730683.post-38959229112056477482008-12-04T01:03:00.000-05:002008-12-04T01:03:00.000-05:00Hooray! If everyone has to wait more than an hour to vote, some people won't be able to vote. People who have to get to work may not have the time. I heard several reports of elderly voters who left because they didn't think they could stand that long.Jeremy Hyltonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05832343974221233570noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19730683.post-85272600409038166032008-11-05T13:02:00.000-05:002008-11-05T13:02:00.000-05:00I've thought for a while now that the best "you ha...I've thought for a while now that the best "you have voted" feedback would be for the machine to print out an actual paper ballot, which the voter would then VERIFY, stick in a privacy envelope, and carry over to the ballot box. The electronic record on the voting machine would be submitted at the end of the day, but if a recount were asked for, the paper ballots would be used for the recount.

Advantages: the ballots are all printed by the machine, so there's no chance of "hanging chads", incompletely filled-in circles, or illegible write-ins. Any recounts will find unambiguous votes. And there's an actual paper record so that recounts can happen.

With this system, the only way of messing with votes is: 1) chicanery with the ballot boxes, which is a well-known method of attack with well establish defenses; or 2) steal someone else's identity (or make up your own) and register twice or twenty times so you can vote twice or twenty times. The latter would best be defeated by requiring ID, which is a whole 'nother rant. (There's some problems with requiring ID to vote, but none that I've found insoluble -- for instance, you'd need to ensure that ID's are available for free so you don't create an unconstitutional poll tax).

Basically, we really, really need to get back to leaving a paper trail behind our voting machines.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00658767707606920890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19730683.post-42380137594774512802008-10-20T19:34:00.000-04:002008-10-20T19:34:00.000-04:00I set up a script that will go out and delete .par...I set up a script that will go out and delete .parentlock at startup.
